The HVAD system

The Hearware HVAD® system allows to treat a wide range of patients with heart failure, improving patient survival and quality of life. This makes the HVAD to be the VAD system of choice for most heart failure programmes all over the world.

Easy

Developed considering the patient’s needs and the MCSA recommendations, it makes easy to implant, manage and learn it.

Versatile

Designed to be used in the widest range of patients possible, allowing a greater flexibility when implanting any VAD existing in the market.

Smart

Created to display instantaneously useful information to help obtain a clear clinical image of the patient’s condition.

Pump design

Potent and compact

The integrated flow inlet cannula of the HVAD® pump allows to use it in small patients, while it is potent enough for large or even obese patients.
Pericardial placement ensures a stable position in the left ventricle, even when body and/or ventricular changes may occur after the implant.

Other advantages of placement inside the pericardial sac are:
  • A smaller incision

  • Removal of the pocket for the pump

  • Different options for output of the driveline

Design without contacts
Hydrodynamic suspension

Hydrodynamic suspension

The heart of the HVAD pump is a hybrid system which includes an impeller suspended magnetically and hydrodynamically. It is the only movable part of the HVAD pump.

Passive magnets

Passive magnets

As soon as the pump is powered electrically, the rotor starts to turn, with no mechanical contact point with the pump, ensuring a system free of contacts or friction.

Thin blood layer

Thin blood layer

Removal of the mechanical pads allows a greater reliability of the device in the long term.

Optimised blood flow

The suspended rotor is designed to guide blood flow optimally through the device, minimising the damage caused on blood cells.

Versatile Surgical Approach

Each patient is unique both in terms of anatomy and physiology. This requires that surgeons evaluate and adjust the surgical approach to obtain the best outcomes.

The new design of the HVAD® pump is adjusted to the different needs of patients, providing a highly versatile surgical approach, in a three-step procedure performed in the pericardial sac.:

Surgical flexibility

The compact design of the device allows alternative placements in patients with:

  • Congenital heart diseases

  • Complex IV anatomy

  • Previous heart surgeries

Removal of the pocket for the pump makes the procedure easier in case of new surgery as well as in future abdominal surgeries.

Management of the patient

The smart design of the HVAD® system makes it easy to learn and manage both for the patient and for the supporting medical team.

The simple, smart interface and the diagnostic tools provide the medical team with all essential information they may need to manage their patients in the most effective way.

For the patients, the HVAD® system offers:

Mobility

  • Lightweight system.
  • A pair of batteries give the system up to 12 hours of power in mobility.
  • Easy plug and play adapters allow mobility at home, in the car or travelling.

Easy to use

  • The controller displays clear information and instructions on a text screen.
  • The alarms, that can be scheduled individually, allow to anticipate potential problems.
  • The controller is self-monitored continuously, alerting of possible events.

Minimum maintenance

  • No daily checks, recalibrations of the batteries or the power circuit are required.

For medical equipment, the HVAD® system offers:

  • Log files that provide additional information to deepen into the clinical scenario and help solve the incidents that may occur in relation to the patient and the equipment.

  • 24-hour support and analysis of the log files.

  • Real-time information which allows the medical team to optimise patient management.

  • A trend log available to review by the medical team when required.
